I learnt so much about myself!
From my very first day at the centre I felt instantly part of the family thanks to the warm Sister Cecilia and the volunteer Occupational Therapist, Francisca, my new Chilean friend.
As a general volunteer I spent much of my time conducting the sensory lessons and english lessons which I tried to make as educational, challenging but as fun as possible. Although it was challenging at the outset to plan activities where all the children were able to partake, I soon found myself adapting to the children´s needs and capabilities and it was so personally rewarding to be able to connect with a child and hear them laugh or witness their surprise at their own creations and achievements. I enjoyed meal times with the children and assisted with feeding at this time, which provided many laughs at my attempt at learning a few Thai words!
The children´s natures: their kindness shown towards others; their appreciativeness and gratitude; sense of humor; and their respect for others, was so refreshing and taught me much about humility and gratitude. Their happy temperaments I believe, can greatly be attributed to the staff at the home who are warm, hardworking and selfless individuals who are patient, kind and loving.
I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity and feel blessed to have been afforded the chance to volunteer at the centre. The staff, accommodation, food and people surpassed my expectations.
